Since we don’t eat or drink as we sleep, we essentially go through a fast every single day for several hours. After all of that rest, your body needs fuel to start the day right. Plus, since the onset of morning hours typically means starting school, getting to work, or even preparing for an intense workout,
A balanced breakfast typically consists of whole grains, protein, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables, as these will provide about a serving of the essential vitamins and minerals you need throughout the day. However, any combination of the food groups is certain to have you feeling great in the morning!
Next, we’ll touch on a morning routine that may seem obvious but is actually quite overlooked.
As you may know, our bodies are made up of over 50% water. So in general, it’s a good habit to drink water no matter what time of day it is. However, it’s especially important to do so in the morning because your body needs to rehydrate. As I mentioned before, we fast during our sleep so it is important to give your body something to work with as you start your day. This is especially important if you’re not a breakfast person.
Hydrating first thing in the morning also provides various benefits such as:
There are many ways to make sure you start your hydration habit in the morning and continue that throughout the day. I like to use a time-labeled water bottle, and another way is to take a gallon-sized jug and fill it with water to drink throughout the day. You could also get a water tracking app or use a written reminder to keep track of your water intake.
Regardless of how you do it, make sure to set it by your bed so you hydrate immediately upon waking up.
Journaling is another classic way to start off the morning right. Writing down your thoughts or intentions in the morning not only helps create a positive, focused mindset but it’s also an opportunity to:
Incorporating any of these habits into your morning routine ensures you take time for yourself every day, reinforcing self-care habits that promote long-term mental health. The same can be said for the next practice: Meditation.
Meditation, much like journaling, is a powerful way to focus and center your mind. Incorporating it into your morning routine can set a positive and grounded tone for the rest of the day. By meditating regularly, you can:
An easy way to incorporate meditation into your morning is to sit in a quiet area, set a 5-10 minute timer, breathe deeply, and let your thoughts carry you on their own. You could also do guided meditation, where you listen to a person, audio, or video as they tell you exactly what to do to achieve a specific meditation goal. There’s tons of guided meditation videos on Youtube to get started!
Now, let’s move on to another morning mindfulness practice.
Whether you do some simple stretches, light yoga, or an intense workout, exercise has been shown to decrease depression, relieve stress and anxiety, and generally improve mood no matter when you do it.
Some people even wake up early just to make sure they have plenty of time for exercise! This is for good reason, considering that incorporating exercise in your morning routine can:
That’s really all there is to it! Just find an exercise regime that works for you and that makes you feel the best.
Having a morning skincare routine is one of the most commonly practiced non-essential morning routine there is, and for totally good reason. Not only does it benefit you to wash off the night’s oil and sweat buildup, having a morning skincare routine also:
Having a skincare routine at night is also useful to essentially undo the dirty work done to your skin throughout the day. No matter when you take the time to apply skincare, you’d be doing yourself a favor by
Incorporating any of these habits into your morning routine ensures you take time for yourself every day, reinforcing self-care habits that promote long-term mental and even physical health.
Whether you start with something as quick as stretching, sipping a nourishing smoothie, or taking a few moments to meditate, each of these habits will help you feel more energized, focused, and prepared for the day ahead.
Remember, the key to success is consistency! Just start with one or two routines and build from there. These small changes can lead to a healthier, happier day and improve your physical and mental health over time. Your mornings set the tone for everything that follows, so why not make them count?
