Introduction

Welcome to Autumn! As the weather cools down and we spend more time indoors, it’s important to make your home more inviting and comforting so you (and others) will want to be there. Decorating can be overlooked as a waste of time and money, but it is essential in turning a house into a home. Even just by adding a plant here and a candle there.

Now is the prime time for redecorating your home with Fall themes. ‘Tis the season to be warm and cozy, after all! Whether you’re into cozy comfort, rustic relaxations, or festive feels, decorating your home at the dawn of Fall is always a welcome change.

If you need a little more than decor to improve your mood this season, consider checking out this post about SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) for more insight on what you might be experiencing.

Seasonal Color Palette

During the Fall season, the most popular colors are variations of red, orange, yellow, green, brown, and white. This is most likely due to the colors of Fall foliage (the colors of tree leaves changing), but you also have the color of pumpkins, red apples, cinnamon and nutmeg, and other similar items that are popular during the Fall. Most of these colors are actually classified as warm colors on the color spectrum, so it totally makes sense why we feel a sense of comfort and warmth when surrounded by those colors!

When incorporating colors into your decor, it is quite easy since all of these colors work well together, regardless of what combinations you choose. That’s part of the beauty of Fall! The most common decor choice is to mix some of the brighter colors with some dark ones to create a perfectly well-rounded space.

Natural Elements

When we think of Fall, some things that automatically come to mind are leaves, pumpkins, and twigs/branches. They’re basically everywhere you go, from the countertop at your local coffee shop to the printed design on the gift bags you buy. This is of course because one of the best ways to embrace the Fall is by incorporating those things into your decorations.

By using some DIY tools, you can even craft your own wreaths, paint and/or carve pumpkins, paint or trace leaves, decorate your own gift bags, and much more! The possibilities are endless. Here’s some popular ideas for adding Fall elements to your decor:

Textures & Patterns

Now, let’s talk about the REAL comforting items: blankets, pillows, and rugs. When we’re putting in our Fall decor, textures such as velvet, knits, faux fur, flannel, and wool are to take the place of your lightweight summer selections. These options are less light-weight and soft, so they’re a perfect addition to make a home more warm and comfy.

When it comes to patterns, flannel, knit type, and wood-type visuals are always appreciated in the Fall. Make sure to include those earthy tones such as burnt orange, deep red, and mustard can create a seasonal ambiance.

Another way to spice up your living room in an affordable way is to change your couch! And I don’t mean buy a new one, I mean buy a couch cover. Couches take up such a huge portion of our living rooms, so adding a fun couch element is another big step in changing up the look and feel of your home.

Be sure to add some in-season throw blankets, pillows, and rugs in as well! This also goes for bedroom decorations.

Textile and pattern elements can be further implemented as paintings, table runners, temporary wallpaper, and more. Do what your heart desires!

Lighting & Ambiance

When it comes to lighting, you could use bright white lighting that is typically around in the Spring and Summer. It helps to brighten up your space with all of the new warm-tones being introduced to your home.

Or you can use warm lighting to add more warmth to the home. Just add some warm white/yellow toned light bulbs to your space to accomplish this.

Another way to play with lighting is to use candles, lanterns, or fairy lights. Fairy lights are by far my favorite Fall lighting choice. They work really well on mantels, draped over furniture, mixed among garlands and wreaths, and as wall decor whether it’s standalone or framed around photos.

To amp up the Autumn ambiance, play some jazz or other cozy music in the background as you work from home, eat dinner, or complete general tasks throughout the home for another nice touch of deeper relaxation. (Fun fact, I was listening to an Autumn jazz playlist as I wrote this post!)

Fall Themed Room Scenting

You can make a simmer pot, light a candle, whip out some wax melts, bring out the potpourri, or use your favorite Fall scented room spray to further elevate the Fall vibes in your home. The scents listed below are absolute magic during this season:

Mantel and Tabletop Displays

Draping garlands made of fall leaves, pine cones, eucalyptus, and/or other seasonal florals (such as mums, sunflowers, roses, dahlias, and phlox) across the mantel is a great way to style that blank canvas. You can also display seasonal art or wood signs with fall-themed quotes and art on the sides of your tv, and/or above the fireplace.

For your tabletops, use the textile and pattern information above to pick a fall-themed table runner. Next, use branches and seasonal florals to fill up a vase and use as your table centerpiece. You can also add small pumpkins alongside the vase if it fits your style preference, or use the pumpkins by themselves.

Finally, pick out some Fall-themed paintings to go near your dining table and create or purchase some Fall-themed placemats and coasters to complete the look.

Outdoor Fall Decor

As I mentioned before, using natural elements is a great way to embrace the Fall. In the case of outdoor decor, you’re using nature to decorate itself! Just because you’ll be spending more time indoors doesn’t mean you can’t simultaneously embrace the outdoors. Go ahead and stack up some pumpkins of different sizes and colors around your entryway or steps.

Hang up your wreath, or use corn stalks and hay bales if you’re into a more rustic kind of Fall setup. This is also another place to bring out the Fall seasonal plants.

Further decorate your yard with some Fall-themed flags or banners, outdoor rugs, and some string lights or LED candles to bring out that soft warm glow.

Sustainability Options

Depending on your decoration goals, you might be wondering what sustainable options you have for decorations, saving money and the environment in the process. How you choose to do that is up to you, but there’s two common options.

Reusable DecorNatural Decor
PROSCONSPROSCONS
Reusable for several years without declining in valueOften made of plastics and other materials that pollute the environmentCompletely freeMight introduce nasty critters to the home
Low effortCosts vary based on decor preferences,  but it’s not free.Environmentally consciousIntroduces eventual decay to the home
